During a short Easter break in the South-east of England, we visited Down House where Charles Darwin lived for forty years. He spent much of this time writing his magnum opus ‘On the Origin of Species’. The House contains many of Darwin’s botanical books, drawings and tools, and a detailed panorama showing his part in the second survey expedition on HMS Beagle, which lasted from 1831 to 1836. The Gardens have been renovated under the auspices of English Heritage.
